Chinese cities in pixels-awesomeness

Today is the official day of awesomeness, so I wanted to share something, I think, is quite awesome. I came across this like a week ago and it has most Chinese cities in detailed pixelated 3d images. This project is from Baidu done as an alternative to Google and bing maps. They have allready made most Chinese cities into these pixelated 3d maps as can be seen above form Guangzhou. It’s quite nice to browse over the map and see the simcity like graphical wonders. This is especially true if you have spent a long time in such a city like I did.

The link is:

Since most cannot read Chinese I made a step by step walktrough to get to the 3D Pixel viewer. Just hit the jump to see how to end up there. Also in the end I’ve posted some comparison pictures with photo’s I took during my stay in Guangzhou.

Step 1
Ok first go to

Step 2

On the site you will see on the right side links with Chinese characters. These are the most popular cities. The top line is at the moment made up by:

北京 Beijing
上海 Shanghai
广州 Guangzhou
深圳 Shenzhen
成都 Chengdu

If you are looking for a different city and you do not know the Chinese name go to this website and translate the name. Also you can just zoom in on the map where you want to go, but keep in mind that for most area’s the 3d  pixel models are not available, yet.

Step 3
If you are on city level(市)you can see on the top right a button with these characters on it 三维. This mean 3d and when you press it the view will change to the simcity pixel look.

Other sites examples
Some of you might still remember the comparison I made of Guangzhou between Google and Bing maps (dutch only, sorry). Here are some the places from back then only now with real photo’s and the Baidu pixel awesomeness pictures.

The South China university of technology (SCUT) where I spent my semester abroad. The selected building is located on the right in the picture.

My old apartment building in Tianhe(天河)

Appartment in Guanggzhou

The one selected is my old apartment building. Also clearly you can see the Citic building and the never finished building frame.

Zhujiang New town

Zhujiang high building

Just to get an idea How tall the buidlings are in Zhujiang new town. The one selected is already like 25 stories high. In the left corner you can see the tip of the TV sightseeing tower and the tall one on the right is the west financial center.
